What can I do with a degree in Creative Writing?

creative writing degree

Apart “write novels” which is the obvious answer to that question. Usually novel writing comes as a second career, after you’ve established yourself in another field such as teaching… which is another thing I don’t want to do.

No stupid answers telling me Creative Writing is not a proper degree. Trust me, it’s not as easy as you think. I have essays to write too.

you could get your BA in creative writing and then get a masters in business or advertising/marketing. you have to be very creative in both advertising and marketing. also, you could be a writer for films of tv, it might take a few years to get into but if you are into in it could really pay off. and there’s not necessarily anything wrong with getting your ba or higher in writing and then teaching a course or 2 at a community college while exploring your other options

I’ve never heard of a creative writing degree.

I suppose if your course and career guideline was more Academic, you could go into teaching, or journalism.

Your degree must have had as its basis in something other than creative writing?

                English literature studies.
English language the way it is spoken.
English language the way it is written.
                The origin of language.

Will your degree be a single honours subject in English or will it say Creative writing? The latter sounds quite worrying as you could find yourself limited as to choice of career.

Choices of career that come to mind are

                Novelist,

                Poet,

Teacher, * you will need a PGCE to go into schools.

Lecturer. University lecturer or tutor, you may be in a position to do this now ask your university human resources dept what vacancies they have in this area.

                Journalist.

Book club leader or writing society leader. Members join who all desire to become published authors. You would need to be running at least 4 a week and to have at least 12 or more members to each group so that you could survive on there weekly subscriptions running with a similar charge to Weightwatchers about 4 pounds each. If your book club is run through a large book chain your reading room may come free provided you give a book review on several books they are pushing to sell.

                Proof reader for a publisher.

I can’t think of anymore off hand but there may be one or two more.

For you to do anything more with this existing degree is difficult.

Could you not have done a course in media studies to have gone alongside it or better still to have done both and come out with a joint honours degree between creative writing and media studies.

Giving yourself the best working chances of earning an income and not spending another 3 years or 4 years doing another lengthy course at University. By that stage you will have become a professional student and found getting a job very difficult.

I am thinking here that you have to be quite artistic to work in the magazine industry or the film and dramatic arts side of things as say a script writer knowledge of how the media industry works would be advantageous to you as would business and marketing design.
