Do i need to have an A level in english to get into university to do an english/creative writing degree?

creative writing degree

Okay here’s my story, well when it was time to decide which subject i wanted to take for college, i couldnt make my mind up and decided that taking business would be a safe decision.

now its my last year in college and i really want to do creative writing or english literature at uni. But i am stuck and i am taking a gap year.

In my gap year i am going to america for work experience for three months, returning and was thinking of taking private creative writing lessons in london coz i thought that it would help my chances of doing english at uni and add a little bit of credibility.

i am also going to submit my own piece of creative writing when applying to university.

what do you think people, do you think doing the private lessons will help??? any chances of me getting into uni with my business qualifications??? i am so confused, m losing the will to live lol..:(

The entry requirements vary between each University and it would depend on which University you are applying to. The best thing to do is to check the entrance requirements for the English Literature degree programme (on the University’s website or prospectus) to see if it stipulates A Level English is required.

If you are in doubt then you could contact the Admissions Tutor from the Faculty (details should be on the University website).

An idea could be to do a joint Honours in Business and English Literature.

One last thing, try not to worry about it. There is a lot more to life than University courses. Everything always works out in the end.

    Hope this helps.

I do Creative Writing at Liverpool John Moores university and I needed at least a C grade in either English Language or English Literature at A Level. I think the same goes for doing English Literature there.

But not all universities are so strict. I applied to the University of Bolton and all they asked for were 200 UCAS points. It didn’t specify any subject. They also do an access course to English and Creative Writing if you don’t have the 200 points. I’ll put the link at the bottom of this answer.

You just need to look around, do your research, and see what universities ask for what. Some, like mine, ask for grades in certain subjects whilst some, like Bolton, don’t.

I am in scotland and to get into uni up here you need at least 5 highers with a-b levels, which must include maths and english, for all uni courses, our highers are above A levels.

I think it would be a good idea.
After all, it would be nice to show that you have some grounding in the subject.
